Many fear dead as fuel tanker explodes on Abuja-Lokoja highway

Lokoja- Nigeria – Many people have been feared dead with several others injured following an explosion of fuel tanker on Sunday in Koton-Karfe Local Government Area, along the Abuja-Lokoja highway.

The Humanitarian Post reports that the fuel tanker exploded after losing control and collided with two commercial buses explosion of the fuel tanker

The explosion was reported to have engulfed the fuel tanker and other vehicles on the road.

Confirming the incidence, Mr Stephen Dawlung, State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, said that officials of the commission had been deployed to the area.

“My men are there already . No detail yet. Many were trapped in the accident . The tanker is still burning, causing traffic challenge on the highways presently.

“I will avail you of the details once we are through,” Dawlung said.

An eyewitness said that the accident happened when a fuel laden tanker lost control and collided with vehicles from the opposite direction.

“The tanker is still burning with many other vehicles that were trapped in the process. I saw two commercial buses and cars on flames.

Security personnel, including operatives of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) making frantic efforts to put out the fire and rescue the passengers trapped in the inferno,” the eye witness said.
