According to Hassan, Lebanese Prime Minister, Hassan Diab has promised to take action as soon as possible, stating that those responsible for the explosion would pay the price.

The Humanitarian Post reports that although the cause of the blast remains unclear, the Lebanese authorities are working on assumptions that it was an accident and not a deliberate act.

It was also gathered that the blast was caused by some 2,700 tonnes of confiscated ammonium nitrate that were being stored in a warehouse at the port for six years.

The effect of the blast has also caused widespread damages on the outskirts of Beirut.
